So, I've noted a lot of overlapping between the Joss fans and the Supernatural fans. Not all, mind you, but enough that I thought this thread might get a little action.
Season two just ended with some shocking developments, as well as the announcement that it may very well be up for some emmy's this year. I know that I, personally, have come to love this show. It's my new Buffy in a lot of ways.
So, am I alone? Or are there others of you lurking in the corners of fandom with no one to talk to?

I'm also a fan of Supernatural. One of the aspects of Joss' works that I'm drawn to most is how he delves into heroism - not only what it is, but also what it means to be a hero and how walking that path affects the person and everyone around him/her. With Supernatural, I think the creators are focusing on these questions as well. One of my favorite recent moments was when Dean was trapped in that wish world where his mother was alive. At the time he thought it was all real, but he still went after the bad guy even though he had a chance to live a life without the fight. He believed that someone needed him and so he stepped up.
Plus, I love me a good group dynamic - which I think is another of Joss' specialities. Even though Supernatural only has two real major characters, I think the brotherly chemistry between them makes for great and satisfying storylines.

Thank you!
I have to argue with so many people in a given day on this point. I can't count the number of times I've heard "they just don't have good chemistry as brothers" which makes just want to start hitting people over the head with a shovel. And not a new one, fresh from the store, either. A dirty one that's been used on sludgy, masty back yards...with bugs...and dog poop. The way those two act as brothers is so believable it's hard for me to see them in interviews and NOT think of them as related.
The Djinn episode made me cry, and that is no small task. I just felt so incredibly horrible for Dean. He was being handed a new life, and he gave it up because it was the right thing to do. I wanted Sam to kill the Djinn. I did. I thought it would have made a nice circle, show that he's not as alone as he sometimes feels. That his brother is there to save him sometimes. But I also think it was fitting that Dean killed it because it underscored the fact that he was so vitally important, not only in the grand scheme of things, but in Sam's life in particular. And Dean has built his whole life around taking care of Sam. Without that...I worry that he won't have anything left. Just look at All Hell Breaks Loose Part 2. Look at what he was willing to give up.

I totally agree about the shovel. That episode (All Hell pt. 2) gave me shivers. I can't believe anyone could see that ep and think there's no brotherly chemistry between those two. Dean's absolute desperation was heartbreaking, and I found myself screaming at the television when he made his way to that crossroads. I hated what it would mean for his future, but at the same time I knew there was no other choice for him. I like Sam's character, but it's Dean's intensity and his need-driven protection that makes me such a fan of the show.
Gods help the world if anything permanent takes Sam from Dean.

I haven't checked out Supernatural, but I have heard nothing but good things about it. May have rent the 1st season and give it a shot.

I'm a Sammy girl myself, as far as preferences go. But Dean's the character I watch for, if you see what I mean. He's just got so much depth than I think any of us suspected he would when we first met him in season one. I like that it's Sam's turn to save Dean, and I'm actually kind of glad for the way it turned out. One year is a long time, considering I think we all know he would have gone a lot lower.
And Sam will make it all better, I know he will. Now that the yellow eyed demon is taken care of, you think he'll start using his powers more?
Browncoat1, I think you would probably enjoy watching season 1. I think of this show as the new Buffy. It has a lot of the same themes and, true, it doesn't have the inherent lightness we've come to expect from Joss work, but it does have it's own brand of humor which is not to be missed. I hope you do decide to check it out.

I can't imagine how anyone could say that they don't have chemistry as brothers. There is so much chemistry it is oozing out of my television.
I think next season will be very interesting for the character of Dean, aside from the fact that he has a 1 year time limit until his death, he will no longer need to be Sam's constant protector. I found it very sad how quickly he was willing to give up his life and soul to bring Sam back and I questioned (there is no doubt that he loved his brother) what percentage of his decision was based on love for Sam and how much was based on his fear that he would let down his father.
Dean loved Sam but their father had placed a heavy burden on Dean's shoulders at a very young age and I am not sure how Dean will handle his life without that burden. He may actually find himself somewhat lost.
Next season should be very interesting to watch.

I too am looking forward to season 2. I like Sam, but I was a little disappointed at times about how much of the over-arching plot seemed to be more concerned with him than Dean. This next season should have lots of possibilities for both brothers to gain depth. I'm interested to see how Sam does in the protective brother role, along with how Dean reacts to having a doom hanging over his head.
It's also interesting what you said about good ol' daddy Wincester. I know he wasn't a really bad guy, but I don't think Dean could ever do enough to get his approval. I'm not so sure, though, that that burden of worrying over Sam is entirely lifted. Yes, the demon is dead, but Sam still has those powers brewing inside him. With that apocalypse averted, does it necessarily follow that Sam's worries about him turning to the dark side of the force are null and void?

Well there's the rub isn't it? We saw how ready Sam was to Kill a man that, previously, he had spared. And he didn't just kill him, he shot him several times. I don't know that it's a direct result of his being dead, exactly, but I think the knowledge that he did indeed die has changed him.
I don't think Dean will ever stop being Sam's protector, regardless of the situation. We know that when Sam was still a baby, Dean would sleep in the crib with him to stop him from crying while John carted them around the country. We know that Dean will always put Sam before himself. And I wasn't at all surprised that he would give himself so fast. Without Sam, his life means nothing in his eyes. I personally believe that without Sam, Dean wouldn't survive long anyway. He'd have nothing left to live for.

I agree I just think that is very sad.

There's a community on Livejournal called spn_secretpost and it's based on the idea of sending anonymous postcards to unburden yourself of secrets you might be keeping. I thought of this one when I was typing my comments above because it was just so perfect it nearly killed me. This one is from Sam to his big brother, and I thought you guys might like to see it.

I love Supernatural. The chemistry between the Winchester boys is what draws me in. I haven't watched the finale yet (damn you, RenFaire!), but with the comments here I have an idea of what happens (don't worry, it doesn't spoil it for me). I (and the hubby) have always felt that if anything truly happened to Sam, Dean would go off the deep end (like when he smashed his car with a crow bar after Dad died. I was in tears). I love the look of the show, the music that they pick, everything. (Ok, except for them trying to make Vancouver look like St. Louis. That was just sad.)
As for the lightness of Buffy, they do have an ep here and there. Remember the one where they were trying to figure out what happened at the college (for the life of me I can't remember the title)? They were each telling their side of the story to....oh, hell, what's his name? The guy who owns the junkyard. Each brother's interpretation was killin' me!
I love this show (and am nursing a serious crush on Jensen Ackles, even though he's 10 years younger than me). Can't wait to see what happens next season!

Glad to see some Supernatural love! I've followed the series since episode one, and I think the show has just grown better and better over the two season arc. I am really looking forward to what will finally possibly be a Dean-centric season (I a big Jensen Ackles fan)! I've heard the CW is trying to get Jensen nominated for an Emmy for his work in the season finale. It would be great to see the CW get a little Emmy love after their repeated snubbing the last few years (i.e. Lauren Graham in Gilmore Girls).
