Maybe we could create sub topics in order to properly inlcude all those that should be included. Guest stars Show impacted Character impacted Fan impacted
I could make a separate top 5 for each of those and they would all be different.

Seems a good way to make my first post would be here. I have my top five overall, but I can come up with separate lists if need be.
1. Buffy (second death) — this definitely changed the scheme of things for season 6: her involvement with Spike, her attitude period, her interactions with the others, Willow's deeper involvement with magic (beginning with the resurrection), etc.
2. Tara. — Lord that was rough. It wasn't so much the actual act of her dying so much as it was Willow's reaction afterward. Her heartbreak and pain (major props for fantastic acting) tore at the viewer's heart. Then it tore at the seams of the very world as Dark Willow prepared to destroy it.
3. Anya — this wasn't exactly devastating in the show, but I was upset. Her death was very Joss-like in the fact that I didn't see it coming at all but no one is safe. However, it was quick and didn't really offer closure aside from Andrew's description of her final moments. I think it's wonderful that she went out fighting for a good cause, but I think she deserved more than she got.
4. Wash — 'nuff said.
5. Joyce — It changed the course of Buffy's life ...
Honorable mentions for me include Fred, Wesley (he was ready to go be with Fred, but it still hurt) and also, Lilah. I liked her. She was fun and I think she did care for Wesley, even though it was a very twisted relationship.
This will probably be updated before the con. lol.

is it too late to change the name of the panel? you'd only have to change one letter

1. Spike (Buffy/Angel) 2. Fred (Angel) 3. Angel (Buffy/Angel)
I can't help it, Buffy'll always be my number one show and the characters in my list are the ones who died who I felt the most attached to.
I still get tears in my eyes when I think about the finale of Buffy.

From an "impact on the fans" perspective, I've found that I have the greatest reaction to characters who die through mundane means. A character who is killed in a way that is consistent with real life can make you think about your own mortality, and how fragile life is. Deaths caused by a stray bullet, disease, etc. are harder to push aside by saying "it's just a TV show" than someone who is swallowed by an enormous snake. So I think my top three are:
1. Joyce 2. Wash 3. Tara

Keeping in mind that I've seen little of Angel or Firefly (so far) and no Dr. Horrible, here's my top five (not necessarily in this order):
1. Joyce. 2. Tara. 3. Buffy in "The Gift." The fans knew she couldn't possibly stay dead, but the characters didn't. 4. Jenny. 5. Warren. This one isn't because the character died, but because of how he died and who killed him. As my sister just said, he wasn't the tragedy of it -- Willow was.
Loads of honorable mentions: Spike in "Chosen" (his wasn't as devastating because it was so clear that's what had to happen well before it did). The 1977 Slayer, mostly for Robin's sake. Darla sacrificing herself for Connor. Anya dying to protect Andrew. Buffy sending Angel to hell. Halfred dying in Anya's place. Principal Flutie. Larry at graduation. Oz killing Willow in "The Wish." Oh, and I meant to include Jonathan!
I'm sure I could list more, but my sister and I must now go do research for her role in the Buffy Horror Picture Show. ;D

As many people have said already, there could be various lists. Character impact, fan impact, storyline impact, but I have to go with what made me cry. Even if I knew they were going to bite it, it still would get me. Not in order. Fred Wesley Doyle Wash (didn't see that one comming) Buffy (the second time, the look of pain on Spike and Giles's faces)

In thinking about this yet again, I am tempted to change my list. I'm not going to though however I am adding Jonathan to the honorable mentions(along with the 4 already listed) if that makes any difference. That puts my total at 10 and I'm still not 100% satisfied with it.
