I've never been to Dragon*Con before so I don't really know the area. My hotel is about 0.7 miles from the convention and I'm sure I'll be heading home late at least once or twice. I was just wondering if the area around the convention was "safe" enough to walk around at night or should some extra safety precaution be taken? I don't want someone to hold me up at gunpoint so they can steal my Con Goodies.

If not then really just do not speak to anyone that tries to stop if they are not wearing a Dragon*Con badge. There are panhandlers run amouck! Wayne

I'll probably be solo some because the people I'm going with aren't really into Joss Whedon stuff so I doubt they'll want to stay for anything that happens later at night.

As a first time attendee you'll probably find it helpful to review the 'pocket program' that's available for download from here... publications.dragoncon.org/index.htm#PocketI'll also put in a plug for the Dragon*Con podcast that I co-host called Dragon*Pod. We've got lots of great information especially for newbies... www.dragon-pod.comGood luck, Kevin

i walked back to the my con hotel alone several times after escorting girls to their offsite hotels last year. didn't seem dangerous, just a lot of aggressive panhandling and crack dealing to decline or ignore
and there is tons of nonwhedon stuff late at night, all the different fandom tracks go till late, plus the concerts and dances and such. so your friends may find plenty to keep them going all night

I walked from the Hilton to the grocery store and pharmacy alone a couple of times last year after dark, though it was not really late 9:30 or 10pm and no one even really paid me any attention. Perhaps Piedmont is just a quieter street I'm not sure.

As a former New York, let me tell you...as long as you keep to yourself, walk with a purpose, and don't look like you don't do this every single night of the week, then you should be alright. If you do have to walk alone, I'd advice putting your badge down your shirt. It's an easy way to identify you as someone who's not really from the area. Key to staying safe in an unknown area is to look like you know what you're doing and don't make yourself a victim.
All that being said, I would be awfully surprised if you even so much as came close to anything remotely dangerous. Mostly just vagrants wanting a handout.

Oh goodness, not sure how you happened on that hotel. Don't open your door for anyone. Next year avoid Pine St. As for walking, there is usually a pretty decent police presence for these events and the downtown area hires a lot of off duty officers as well. Like everyone else said, most of it is people looking for a handout. They can get fairly aggressive at times, but a lot of it has to do with if they think they can push your around. If all else fails tell them you work for Grady and that is usually enough for them to leave you alone. They all know the Grady folks don't share the love well.

Walk and talk to yourself. Folks will think you are crazy and leave you alone. At least it works for me. At least I don't *think* I'm crazy. Need to check with the voices.

We landed on that hotel because everything else was booked and we needed something decently close to the Con. That's what my friends get for delaying my hotel booking.

I've decided. I'm going to hire one of you to be my personal taxi for my 0.7 mile trip home. You don't have to speak in a foreign accent (like the stereotypical city cab driver) but you MUST have some intense body odor. No exceptions! It has to be like the real thing.

Honey you're going to be at a convention. Body odor won't exactly be in short supply.

Honey you're going to be at a convention. Body odor won't exactly be in short supply. I promise you that I will smell great. I will carry spray deodorant in my backpack if I must along with miniature bottles of Giorgio Armani.
