Now, I know most of you guys probably weren't comic book fans before Buffy went to Dark Horse, but I see that changing daily, so I thought I'd help you guys out by giving you a point in the right direction, with some handy reccommendations:
Comics by Joss
Fray-This comic is a must. It's Canon Buffyverse, for one thing, written several years in the future. I loved the writing style, I loved the storyline, and I loved Melaka Fray. It's hard to think of getting behind a slayer who isn't Buffy, but with Mel, I really did.
Runaways-I highly reccommend starting at the very beginning of this series with Brian K. Vaughans work. The moment I started reading this one, I couldn't put it down. It follows the story of a group of teenagers who discover that their parents are in a secret society of super villians. It has the light quippiness we remember from those first years of Buffy, along with the disturbing darkness we are all so familiar with. Great Read.
Astonishing X-Men-The X-men can seem a bit daunting to those who have never read their stories before, but this was really a fun way to break into it. Gone are the depressing, soap opera style stories of previous X-Men titles. Here we have a fast wit and love of adventure that Any Buffy fan will appreciate.
One thing is important to know before going into this series. It is not a self contained story. For those who might be interested in reading it, I give you some background information here:
Comics for Joss Fans
Invincible-Remember the days when Buffy was worried about missing her dates because she had patrol? Oh those early seasons...well, they've been recatpured here. Invincible is about a kid who, around sixteen, discovers that the powers he's been waiting for all his life have finally developed. With a resounding "About Time!" he throws himself into the life of a hero with reckless abandon. But things aren't always what they seem, and sometimes you learn that you can't trust everyone, even the people you love the most.
Y: The Last Man-A sudden, unexplainable virus eliminates every living creature on the planet with a Y chromosome. Every male, in every species, died in one single moment of blood and confusion. Except two. Yorick Brown and his pet monkey Ampersand begin a journey that will take them across the world in search of an answer for the mysterious virus, and their own survival.
Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane-Angst, angst, angst, with a side of angst. Do you ever miss watching Angel and Buffy with their "I love you but I can't be with you" moments? Look no further. This comics is a wonderful high school love story that will make your heart twinge in all the right places. Sometimes a little angst is just what we need.
